Petronas YoungStars Day 2016

Assalamualaikum,

Hello there! Alhamdulillah expect the unexpected. Petronas YoungStars Day (PYD) is actually for those who have been shorlisted based on their application to Petronas Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP) 2016. Alhamdulillah i'm so happy and grateful for being shorlisted by Petronas. I'm not saying that im good enough to be there but this entry is mainly published to share my experience during the PYD 2016. Thank you Petronas!

PYD 2016 was held at KDU University College and Taylor's Uni. I went to KDU University College on 4th April. As I entered the hall at level 3A for registration , I had cold feet ! All the candidates came with their pretty-smart-outfit-of-the-day. I was wearing my simple baju kurung. But that' was not a big deal tho. At my right side was Saserian. But he looked very quiet. So we didnt talk much. Luckily I met Anis Dayana :)

1st Stage

 Online application

2nd Stage (during PYD)

 Cambridge Personal Styles Questionnaire (CPSQ)

an assessment for behavioural styles. Honesty is the best policy right? So just be honest during this test. 40 minutes to answer all the questions and we cannot return back to the previous page. The candidates were divided into 10 groups for 10 computer labs as well. Each group was around 20 candidates.

 AND 

Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA)

Basically TSA is a test of critical thinking (English comprehension) and problem solving skills (calculation). This test consists of 40 questions and we were allocated about 90 minutes to answer all the questions.

Frankly speaking, the TSA was a bit tricky to me. I can say that 2/3 the questions I hentam dengan lafaz Bismillah. I didnt expect to be qualified for the 3rd stage which was an interview session with Petronas leaders. If I fail this stage, I can go home early. Somehow, alhamdulillah I passed this stage.

3rd Stage (during PYD)

We were divided into new groups. Around 5 or 4 candidates in each group. We were given a case study about something to do with Petronas sales. 15 minutes were given to each candidate to jot down our ideas. We were not allowed to discuss with our groupmate.

After that, we were ushered to the respective interview room. We used to introduce ourselves to our beautiful and charming panelists. Amboi bodek ke ni? Oh yeah there were two panelists for each group.

We presented our innovative ideas in less than 5 minutes. The panelists allowed us to speak either in malay or english. But I prefer to use English.

We then proceed to a proactive group discussion for 30 minutes. We needed to choose the best idea based on the presentation by our groupmates to be implemented by Petronas.

Alhamdulillah surprisingly they chose my idea.


I went back home from KDU university college , Shah Alam at 6pm after finishing the interview session. Thank you to my beloved father and sister for accompanied me to the awesome PYD 2016.

The results will be announced by 15th April according to our panelists.

Alhamdulillah I've been awarded the Petronas sponsorship programme to study abroad. InsyaAllah. Wish me luck !

      Waalaikumussalam izzah, hmm interview tu tak susah sangat. Cuma ada case study and discuss dlm group. Guna BM pun boleh tapi kalau awak apply untuk overseas, maybe it's better for you to use english. All the best!

    Assalamualaikum kak aiza. I was wondering if the tsa assessment were done by what course i chose on on9 application or all the candidates will answer the same questions?

      Waalaikumusaalam,all the candidates will answer the same questions and it doesnt relate to the courses that you chose at all. there are ample of tsa sample questions on the internet. try lah.

    Assalamualaikum kak aiza suraya. Syarat untuk diterima ke pyd ni sama ke dgn yg thun lps punya. Sbb sy tengok2 yg thun lps tu syarat dia nk 4a+. Sy x dpt pun 4a+ tp dia shortlistkan jgk untuk ke pyd nnti. Sy bimbang dia tersalah pilih je. Sbb klau macam tu, sy rasa macam xnak pergi je pyd 23 hb ni. Do u have any suggestion for me? Either i should go or not?

      Waalaikumussalam aisafara, first of all, congratulations for being shortlisted! I dont think Petronas tersalah pilih you. Even kalau tersalah pilih pun, itu rezeki awak. I would highly recommend you to go and experience the pyd yourself ! Believe that you deserve that sponsorship! Jangan insecure even yang xdpt straight As in my batch pun ada yang dapat. Dia nak tgk personality you. Kesimpulannya, I think you should go :)

    Assalamualaikum akak... Alhamdulillah sy pun shortlisted utk pyd tu .. Tapi honestly I'm not sure abt all this because I'm a kind of person yg myb krg confidence level tu.. I'm just worried abt the study case n group iv.. Basically iv lah.. So how? Sy selalu like fikir yg other candidates mst sume hebat2, speaking high class, like everyone awesome la... N one more Petronas ni full scholarship ke or ade loan coz saya ade terbaca 20% loan and Klau dpt keje ngn petronas tu kira x perlu byr..

      Congratulations for being shortlisted! Whats the most important is you gotta believe in yourself so that others could believe in you too,thats how the world works,doesnt it ?

      True, Petronas will sponsor 80% and another 20% tu bayar balik kalau tak dapat kerja dengan Petronas. Kalau dapat, 100% sponsorship.

      Yes, currently i'm still in taylors lakeside doing ADP. Two more weeks till finals and insyaAllah this gonna be my last sem here. InsyaAllah I ll be flying to the US in the middle of august. Doakan..

    Assalamualaikum Aiza Suraya, thanks for sharing your experience and may Allah reward you....I too was shortlisted for petronas' YSD and I would like to ask if there was any questions regarding your choice of career durring the iv?...and could you suggest on what topic should I study.       Waalaikumussalam amirul, congratulations for being shorlisted to PYD!

      There was no question asked about the course you select. Frankly speaking, no specific topic that needs to study. Maybe you can try the tsa sample questions given by petronas.

      Alhamdulillah, I've been awarded the PESP to pursue my studies in the US, just like you. Your blog helped me a lot in preparing for the iv so I would like thank you... and I would like to know, nak fulfill requirement petronas untuk adp tu senang x? I heard that adp is not exam-based like spm/A-levels so mesti senang kan? Ke susah mcm IB? Jazaki Allahu Khair

      Back to your question, yes, adp ni 70% coursework (which include participation and attendance, quizzes, tests, project) and 30% je final. Cuma grade dia tinggi. 70 dah fail. As a Petronas scholar, the min CGPA requirement to fly is 3.50. Tbh, tak susah pun nak lepas 3.50 kalau kita konsisten. My batch baru je dapat results and 90% lepas untuk fly this august. Alhamdulillah.

      To me, adp is one of the easiest pre-u compared to A level , IB etc. But dont take it easy. Dah dpt peluang ni, kita buat betul2.

    Assalamualaikum kak, saya nak Tanya. Kalau for utp programme, dia Ada suruh sertakan sekali utp application form. Means that we have to apply for utp ke macam mana. I try to contact the helpdesk but tak dapat. I really hope you can help me sis. May Allah bless you always

      Waalaikumussalam, maksudnya awak apply petronas sponsorship for UTP lah kan?

      I'm not really sure bout this but I think that one only meant for those applicants yang dah pernah apply/masuk UTP je. lasy year, my friend yang apply PESP for UTP tu tak sediakan application form pun sebab dia mmg tak apply lagi. Kalau dapat PESP, baru petronas uruskan.

      1st assessment tu pasal Cambridge personal styles questionnaire. It's all about your personality.

      2nd assessment is Thinking Skills questions. I think petronas ada bagi cth soalan. Or you can google je. Soalan dia macam biasalah ada ayat2 sikit mcm problem solving punya question. Lepastu ada juga english conprehension punya soalan.

      And kalau lepas 2 assessments tu, baru akan join interview petang tu. Interview dia bagi case study. Last year petronas marketing punya strategy.

    Assalamualaikum akak ! Hehe, it's me again! One question, is there any condition to ensure the sponsorship will be continuously until degree? Like u have to gain a specific pointer or u just have to pass the exam? Or like what?

      Waalaikumussalam haziqah,
      Definitely yes! Different programs have different minimum requirements. For American Degree Program (my program), the minimum pointer to fly to the US (for degree) is 3.50 .

      I'm not sure about the rest. But there is a specific requirement to ensure that the scholars maintain their academic performance.

    Hi.i've just did all assessment for pyd17 but my worry is killing me😭. What i'm worrying about is will they choose someone who score exactly 4a+,4a,2a- ? Cuz i met with other candidates and who score with more excellent result. Getting this scholarhip would mean so much to me. Wont u mind share ur opinion regarding this? Thank u for ur time.😊

      To be frank Afrina, it is not all about the academic. The most important thing is you are able to present yourself in front of the interviewer. Your need to be confident when speaking to them.

    Were there any interview like direct personal questions to applicants? Like why choose this Course? why this country?
    Or just case study session , ask questions based on our answers?

      Hi Irene, I just noticed your comment. hope it's not too late.

      If I'm not mistaken, no personal questions were asked to applicants. We only introduced ourselves at the beginning of the interview session. The interview only focused on the case study, and they just wanted to hear our opinion based on it. Hope this helps.
